More About Me

Born in Townsville and a graduate of the National Art School and Melbourne University, Peter has lived and worked in Sydney for the past 30 years. Whilst living in London from 1970-73 he studied ceramics and photography and has been painting seriously since 1981. He paints in oil, acrylic and mixed media with a spontaneous and intuitive immediacy that is obvious in the energy, vitality and impact of his work.

Artist Statement
My paintings are a personal response to the sublime in nature and the impact of mankind upon it. They comment on the effects of man’s presence on his environment – traces people make on the places they touch; marks on the canvas echoing the marks we make as we live out our lives.

I seek to express my personal vision which is deeply rooted in experiences of the landscape, the beach and the cityscape. The feelings of awe we experience when confronted with grandeur and the pain of beauty defiled reflect both our connection and disconnection with the environment. My work is a response to these opposites, triggered by past memories and events, and drawing on images, shapes, surfaces, and textures to create floating layers of colour and meaning.

I seek above all an emotional response in the viewer – how it feels being more important than what it’s about. I concentrate solely on the intuitive act of making art allowing the image to emerge from the painting process itself. The ambiguity of abstraction juxtaposed with form allows a balance to be achieved between spontaneous gesture and control
